About the event

2023 Annual Paediatric Symposium: Making Connections Between Disciplines, Clinicians, Government and Private Sector to Advance Interdisciplinary Care for Early Detection and Treatment for Infants and Children with or at High-Risk for Cerebral Palsy.

Every hour a baby is born with cerebral palsy, the worldwide incidence of cerebral palsy is 1 in 500 births and there are currently 18 million people in the world who have cerebral palsy making cerebral palsy the most common lifelong physical disability. There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but supportive treatments, medications, and surgery can help many individuals improve their motor skills and ability to communicate with the world. This symposium aims to:

  1. To help the health system reduce the incidence of Cerebral Palsy
  2. Encourage interdisciplinary approaches for the care of children with Cerebral Palsy
  3. Contribute to improving the quality of life for children with Cerebral Palsy
  4. Provide HCWs with a skill building program for the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy.

  • Feeding strategies for a child with CP.
  • Treatments for other Conditions Associated with CP.

  • Improving Daily Living through Assistive Devices.
  • Preparing children with CP for adolescent and adult life.
  • Fair compensation and minimising impact of Malpractice Claims.

  • The symposium is an interactive public workshop facilitated by experts in the field and will be made available for virtual access via zoom.
  • 21 April 2023: Pre-Symposium Paediatric Surgical Skills (Live demonstration of 8 Cases: Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and Placement of a Feeding Gastrostomy and Post-op Care.)
  • 22 April 2023: Day 1 Symposium Didactic Sessions
  • 23 April 2023: Day 2 Symposium Didactic Sessions

Who should enrol?

Healthcare professionals registered with the relevant professional council: Specialists, Medical Officers, Registers, Clinical Associates, Midwives, Professional Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, Speech and Audio Therapists, Oral Health, etc. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged.

Accreditation:

This program is a critical component of healthcare worker Continuous Professional Development and accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professions for 16 CPD Points. The certificate will be available within 48 hours once the program is successfully completed.

Certification:

To qualify for the certificate of completion for this program, participants should fully attend the symposium fully as well as successfully complete the assessment process.

Surgical Skills Building Workshop, mentored in Theatre to be held at Kiaat Private Hospital and Rob Ferreira Public Hospital, Mbombela. Mpumalanga:

  • Priority skills: Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and Placement of a Feeding Gastrostomy and Post-op Care.

Registration Fees:

  • Limited to 8 Medical Officers/Registers for live training in theatre @ fee R2500.00/person.
  • Visual live demonstration via Zoom @ fee R500/person.

22-23 April 2023 – The Symposium

An educational experience through didactic sessions presented by inter-disciplinary professionals, to be held as follows:

    This ticket includes access to the 2023 Annual Paediatric Symposium on the 22 and 23 April 2023. The fee includes conferencing, tea and lunch, and CPD certificates. Travel and accommodation is excluded. Attendance Options - Virtual Attendance: 21-23 April 2023, which includes all sessions - In-Person Attendance: only available from 22-23 April 2023. Tickets for the in-person surgical skills building and mentorship is limited to 8 medical trainees and the tickets are sold separately.
